WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY FAQs

  • Cryotherapy was first developed in 1978 by a Japanese doctor seeking relief for patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. He discovered that rapidly lowering the temperature of the skin led to the release of endorphins and a significant reduction in pain sensitivity.

Although modern cryotherapy is highly advanced and uses state-of-the-art technology, the therapeutic use of cold has ancient origins. Known as the "Cold Cure" in Ancient Greece, the practice dates back as far as 2500 BC, with civilisations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans using cold exposure to treat pain, inflammation, and support internal healing.

  • Almost anyone can benefit. While athletes and fitness enthusiasts frequently use cryotherapy for recovery and performance, it's also widely embraced by people managing chronic pain, stress, fatigue, and inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatism, and fibromyalgia.

Cryotherapy can also support post-surgical recovery, general wellness, and even non-invasive beauty and weight management treatments. Research shows it can accelerate recovery from physical exertion and contribute to improved mood and sleep quality.

As with any therapy, certain health conditions may be contraindicated — our team will guide you through a thorough medical pre-screening before your first session.

  • Yes, it can. Cryotherapy activates neurological, endocrine, and immune responses that support healing. It boosts white blood cell production, reduces muscle oedema, enhances waste elimination, and decreases inflammation.

Additionally, cold exposure can reduce pain signals sent to the brain, helping you regain movement and flexibility. Cryotherapy supports cell regeneration, muscle repair, and helps you return to full function more quickly.

  • Absolutely. Cryotherapy is widely used across professional sport. It promotes increased blood circulation, strength, mobility, and mental clarity. The rapid temperature change stimulates the body’s natural healing response and supports immune function, all while boosting energy and focus.

  • No, cryotherapy does not hurt. The chamber is cold — but it’s a dry cold, not wet like an ice bath. Most clients describe the experience as invigorating, uplifting, and even euphoric.

If at any point you feel uncomfortable, the treatment can be stopped immediately or adjusted to suit your tolerance. Many clients find that with each session, their comfort level improves.

  • Each session lasts for 3 minutes, which is the optimal time for maximum benefit. Your first session will begin at a more moderate temperature, typically around -100°C, and may gradually decrease to as low as -140°C in future sessions — always under the guidance of your therapist.

  • That depends on your goals and individual needs. Some people feel an immediate difference after just one session — often reporting better sleep, reduced muscle tension, and improved energy for 4–6 hours post-treatment.

For chronic pain or long-term issues, we often recommend 6–10 sessions in close succession (every 2–3 days), followed by maintenance sessions weekly or as required. Your therapist will work with you to create a tailored treatment plan.

  • We ask you to remove all metal objects, except for earrings or rings which are outside the treatment zone or can be safely covered. We provide secure storage for your belongings during your session.

  • Yes, cryotherapy is very safe when carried out by trained professionals. At 7CryoHealth, we provide protective slippers and gloves, and ask women to wear shorts and a vest top, and men to wear shorts. The head remains outside the chamber for open communication and comfort, and treatments can be stopped at any time.

  • No, showering before cryotherapy is not necessary. However, if you have been sweating or are wet (e.g. post-exercise), it is essential that you are completely dry before entering the chamber — a towel will be provided.

    • Men: Shorts or swim trunks and thick socks.

    • Women: Swimwear, or shorts and a crop top — whatever feels most comfortable

We also recommend bringing a dressing gown for comfort when moving between the changing area and the chamber. Gloves and slippers will be provided by our team.

  • Yes. The design of our chamber means your head remains fully outside, and the door uses magnets, so it never locks. You’ll be in constant communication with your therapist, and a friend or family member is welcome to be present if desired.

  • Yes — in fact, many people use cryotherapy both pre- and post-exercise.

Before exercise, it may increase your pain threshold and muscle flexibility. Afterwards, it can accelerate recovery and reduce soreness. If you’ve been sweating, we may ask for a short cool-down period and a towel dry before your session.

  • Most people report feeling energised, focused, and positive. It’s common to experience a “natural high” from the endorphin release, and many also enjoy improved sleep after just one session. Each person’s experience is unique, and we love hearing your feedback!
